We Are Outta Here!

Surprise!  We are home already!  After telling me yesterday that we should plan for another 3 nights of inpatient stay, Fionn's doctor had a change of heart.  She decided that we were ready for discharge today.  Her point was this.  Although Fionn's ANC went down a bit further today (from 240 to 200), it didn't totally bottom out.  What's more, Fionn seems to feel great.  He looks great too.  His chest is clear, and his fever has been gone for more than 24 hours.

That said, Fionn's chemo has been discontinued for the coming week.  Fionn's doctor wants to see his counts come by up before we resume his nightly oral chemo.  That is fine by me, folks.  We will return to the clinic on Monday the 16th to check Fionn's counts and see where we are at that point.  I'm hoping they look nice and hearty so we feel really comfortable heading to Minnesota next Thursday.

Perhaps it was because we knew it was our last day before discharge, but today was a great day.  We spent the entire morning in the art room.  Now, I have to remind you that our little guy usually turns his nose up at all things artistic (we usually spend our "art room" time building fire stations out of the foam blocks they have there),  But today Fionn totally rocked some artistic expression.  I was so excited!  Here he is, hard at work.  I tried to capture every moment because Lord knows when he will want to do it again!

Last but not least, we had a Face Time call with Fionn's school buddies today.  It was our first time doing this.  Fionn's other inpatient stays lately have been on the weekends (or they took place during those first few weeks of his new school when he hardly knew his classmates).  This time it was awesome.  Fionn took them on a quick "tour" of the hospital which basically meant they watched him ride his John Deere tractor down the hall.  The best part though was just seeing how excited and interested all the kids seemed to be in Fionn and how he was doing.  Some of the kids (all girls, of course) asked, "How are you doing, Fionn?  How are you feeling, Fionn?"  It was really adorable.  Here is a pic that one of the coop moms today took which shows how interested all the kids were in the conversation.

I swear I was not trying to block Fionn from the conversation.  He was just being a little shy...I swear.

Well, that's about it.  We are SO glad to be home and able to enjoy the Spring-like (ish) weather that has popped up in our area.  The new playground across the street has been restored (Remember the arson?  Yep, that happened), and kids are actually playing there now.  It's awesome.  We can't wait to get out and be part of it.  Fionn will stay home from school tomorrow at his doc's recommendation while his immune system continues to recover, but he should be back with his buddies on Wednesday.
