Welcome to the World, Baby Fionn!

We can now joyously retire the moniker of Baby C because our darling Fionn has finally arrived! Yes, as most of you already know, Seamus Fionn Crimmins entered the world on Friday, May 28, at 3:50 pm. He came out screaming (and peeing actually!), sporting a crown of bright blond hair and a rounded little Crosthwait nose (as predicted). He weighed 7 lbs, 14 oz. and was 22 inches long.

Of course, it goes without saying that Conor and I are completely smitten with our new baby boy. You know, people try to tell you how amazing it is to hold your new baby in your arms for the first time, but I suppose it's one of those things that you simply do not completely comprehend until it actually happens. It is truly just the best feeling. We feel so lucky and blessed.

Aside from our love for Fionn, we also feel so overcome with gratitude for all of the well wishes and the outpouring of love from all of our friends and family. Fionn is a lucky child indeed to be surrounded by so many amazing, caring people. Thank you all so much! Below are a few pictures of Fionn's first visitors at the hospital. From the top: Corey, Matt, and Lilly Thornblad, Victoria Ansong, and "Uncle" Bill Keeler. Fionn loved meeting these special new friends.

We have received a lot of questions about the name. Yeah, we expected as much. So here's a little play-by-play about the name choice. First and foremost, we wanted to choose a strong, Irish name for our little boy as Conor's Irish heritage is so very important to him. Second, we wanted to choose a name that would be meaningful to one or both of our families. The name Seamus (pronounced SHAY-mus) is Gaelic for James which is my father's name. Our darling Fionn is named for him. James is also the name of my mother's late father as well as Conor's late maternal grandfather, so it's a pretty special name all around. Below is one of the first pictures of Fionn with his namesake, James Lewis Crosthwait.

My dear father was present at the birth (not literally in the labor room, but waiting patiently in the hallway) which meant so very much to us. It was so special to tell my dad in person that his grandson carries his name -- in a slightly different form, that is. I think this next picture captures that moment pretty well.

The name Fionn (pronounced FIN) means "fair." Although we knew that there was a good chance that our son would indeed be "fair" given his two pale parents, this really wasn't our reason for selecting the name. We basically just loved the name Fionn, plain and simple. Finally, we decided to use the Irish spelling instead of calling him the more familiar variation, Finn, because we wanted to make life harder for him. Haha, just kidding. I was just checking to see if you were paying attention. No, we honestly just preferred the Irish spelling, and we like that it is more unique. There probably won't be too many other Seamus Fionns on the playground. At least that is our prediction.

Obviously, we will continue to update the blog at least weekly (probably more because we are so obsessed with sharing news about our son!), and we definitely plan to update our flickr site as well with additional photos of our boy. In the meantime, please know that we so appreciate your emails, texts, and phone calls even if we have not yet responded. We will respond in time, but Fionn is keeping us pretty busy right now as you might imagine.
